Oscar
Wilde’s ‘The Nightingale and the Rose’ is a folk tale in which a
nightingale
overhears a young student express his fears about losing the
young
woman he loves forever. The young woman threatens to abandon
the
student unless he gives her a red rose. Taking pity on the student,
the nightingale sacrifices her life in order
to procure a red rose for the
young
man. However, the bird’s sacrifice proves to be in vain. The story
foreshadows the consequences
of not appreciating nature and its
creations.
The learner is already familiar with the folk tale and were interested
in
the
characters and events appeared in folk tale. They also understood
the
power of nature in one’s life.

the student’s view or idea about the term
folk tale and ask to mention the
names of their favourite folk tale.
Teacher shows the picture of some folk tales.
Also explain about the folk tale and its
main features.
After that the teacher draws the attention of the learner to the story
named “
The Nightingale and the Rose” and also provides a chart about

With the effective introduction about the story the teacher read the
content of the passage and then describes
the meaning of the sentence. Teacher write down some
difficult word from the passage on the blackboard
like;-
If the learner
found any other difficult words, they can directly ask the teacher or
can refer the pocket dictionary. Then the
teacher allows some learners to read the passage loudly.
After that the teacher arranges the students
into groups and asks them to share their ideas about
the content. Then the teacher asks some
questions about the lesson to each group like;-
· What is the title of the story?
· Who is the author?
· Who heard the young student’s cry?
· Why does the nightingale think that the student is a true lover?
· Why does the young man think that his life is wretched?
After that the teacher gives the question,
And asks them to construct an answer on
their own. Then the teacher consolidates the learnt
portion and gives them a work to do at
home.
